By now you are probably seeing these Christmas figures made of hard plastic popping up somewhere in your neighborhood.  Some might call them tacky but collectors prefer to call them light up lawn art.  Christmas fanatics love them!

These vintage hollow plastic lawn ornaments are called blow molds because of the method used to make them. Melted plastic is blown into a mold.  Some have the color molded into the plastic, but most are painted.  A lightbulb is placed inside to give them the warm glow of the season. These highly prized collectibles come in a large variety of shapes and sizes.  Blow molds were first made in the 1940’s but they really caught on in the late 1950’s.

The most collectible vintage blow molds are made by Union or Empire Plastic Corp.  However many companies made them from the 1950’s through the 1990’s.  Every holiday, character, and animal is represented in some form, but Christmas blow molds are the most desirable.
